While we do measure crime statistics by neighborhood on our police department's website, crimes per 1000 citizens is a good way to measure overall safety in a city. This metric includes both violent and nonviolent crimes.

Quantitative indicators such as the number of crimes per 1000 citizens are concrete ways that we can measure and improve safety. It is important also to compare our crime statistics to those of other cities, so that Metropolis remains an attractive place to live.
